Description

HOLY CRAP I POSTED SOMETHING THAT ISN'T IN SOME WAY RELATED TO BATMAN.
AND DOUBLE HOLY CRAP, IT'S THE RETURN OF MY LICH AND HIS WARFORGED BBY.

I've actually been wanting to draw something like this with Finariel and Phillipe for a long time now. Primarily because I consider them to have very much a Mother-Gothel-and-Rapunzel sort of relationship. (I cannot hear "Mother Knows Best" anymore without picturing them...which means I always get the odd mental image of lich!Fin singing whilst rolling Phillipe up in a rug.)
I've had one or two people ask me why it is that I consider their relationship to be closer to that of Mother Gothel and Rapunzel, rather than say, Frollo and Quasimodo. A fair question to be sure, particularly considering the extreme similarities between Gothel and Frollo and their charges, thematically speaking.
I think the reason for this is the way that we see Mother Gothel depicted in "Tangled," and the way she treats Rapunzel. Whereas Frollo quite frankly is quick to point out he finds Quasimodo repulsive "and for that reason, you should be all the more grateful I'm such a good man that I was willing to overlook this and raise you, because ugliness is a crime," and verbally abuse and emotionally manipulate him very openly all in the same breath... well, Mother Gothel is somewhat more subtle with the way in which she makes hurtful jibes at Rapunzel, and to a degree, the audience can tell that she SOMEWHAT cares about Rapunzel. Frollo doesn't care about Quasimodo at all; he considers Quasi to be a chore and it's obvious he only puts up with raising him for fear of reprimand and possible excommunication from the church. Gothel is subtly verbally abusive and extremely possessive, but to an extent, she does care about Rapunzel. (Not more than she cares about herself, obviously, but it's there.) And for that reason, I consider Phillipe and Finariel's relationship to be closer to that of Rapunzel and Gothel.

Besides, I had to draw this. I should have drawn something for my self-appointed LHxDi month during March, but I didn't. And since the week of April 10th is apparently "lich week" for me, I decided I might as well at least make ONE of my personal deadlines.

I don't know why, but when you said "Lich!Fin," I thought you were talking about the Fin from Adventure Time and I got sorely confused.

Anywho, that's a very interesting and thorough examination of Frollo and Gothel.  I haven't seen Hunchback since the first time I saw it as a kid (I think the lack of fantastical creatures and overall morbid darkness made me uneasy as a kid), but that sounds like what I remember of Frollo.  As for Gothel, I always felt she cared about Rapunzel too; not sure how much, considering she clearly cared more about herself and was willing to make Rapunzel a recluse, but I always felt like she did actually care about Rapunzel (albeit, in her own way).  That's why I was actually disappointed with how Tangled ended; you can clearly see that Rapunzel is unhappy to see her "mother" die, but the movie itself is just like "LOL, she sucks" and the fact that the chameleon tripped her out the window felt insensitive and unnecessary to me.  Gothel was having an excellent "succumb to her own vices" plot and would have tripped over that window ledge on her own, but they felt the need to make a joke at her expense by having the chameleon trip her...even though Rapunzel was clearly sad to see this happen to Gothel.

Aaaaaanywho, my rantings aside, that's an interesting dynamic you have between Finariel and Phillipe.  I always like it when villains seem to have some core of goodness in them, even if they're completely wicked and cruel on the surface.  You're off to a good start with this pic but, if you don't mind my saying, a little color or inking could help this stand out.
